Does Your Skin Type Change with the Seasons?

Do you feel like your skin changes from season to season?  We got to thinking…does your skin type change with the seasons?  We’re sharing whether it does, or doesn’t now…

Our skin comes with a range of obstacles, traits and necessary care.  Chances are you have a pretty good understanding of what your own skin type consists of, which is a huge hurdle in really taking care of your skin in the best way possible.  So often, experts talk about needing to understand our skin’s type to really be able to care for it properly.  However, if your skin changes the way you care for your skin needs to change with it.  Since so many of us experience different things with our skin throughout the different seasons, it goes us thinking…does your skin type change with the seasons?

So naturally, we got to answering this question because we know you’ve probably thought the same thing.  Most experts suggest that the actual skin type we have doesn’t necessarily change during the seasons…it’s just affected differently based on the environmental changes we’re surrounded by.  What does this really mean?  Well many of us tend to experience more dryness in our skin during the winter months.  But as it turns out, it’s not that our skin type changes from whatever it was before to being a dry skin type during the winter.  What it really means is that our skin is just lacking more hydration but we’re not completely transforming our skin’s type.  Make sense?

Since our skin is a major organ in our body it’s always working to protect itself and adapt to the surroundings, which is really why you likely experience some changes in your skin from season to season.  This isn’t to say that you shouldn’t adapt your skin care routine to fit and fix those changes in your skin, but understand that your skin type didn’t actually change.  Rather, you need to work to address the particular changes to get those back on track while working with your existing skin’s type.

Often times, the changes that many people experience in the changes in seasons with their skin can be catered to with a healthy skin care routine.  Ensuring that you’re establishing healthy skin care habits like a consistent morning and evening skin care routine, exfoliating on a regular basis, eating healthy and of course drinking a LOT of water are things that all skin types need.  Although you need to work with your skin type, one of the ways to really work with any changes you may experience in the change of seasons is to change your skin care products to cater to that.  For example, if you notice that your skin becomes drier during the winter months switch to skin care products that are creamier and more hydrating but still designed to work with your skin’s type to give you the best results.

One thing to keep in mind, though is that we can experience skin type changes throughout our lives.  Things like hormonal changes can definitely have an impact on our skin’s type, so you will want to keep an eye on those changes over time.
