Caring for Your Skin While You Have Fun in the Sun

The sun is starting to show itself a bit more as it starts to feel like spring (and summer) throughout most of the US. Exciting, isn’t it? The sun always feels so great after the long, gloomy winter months. While it’s tempting to want to just head out the door and enjoy the sun, it’s also the time of year where we need to be sure we’re protecting our skin. As the weather heats up, the sun becomes more intense and you already know the sun’s rays can be pretty tough on your skin. That’s not to say you have to stay inside all spring and summer, though. We have some tips to help you in caring for your skin while you have fun in the sun.

Apply SPF the Right Way

Yes, there’s a right and wrong way to apply SPF. When it comes to sun block and SPF products, many people tend to forget to give your skin a chance to absorb the product before heading out the door. We get that it’s exciting to start enjoying the warm weather, but when you don’t allow your skin that time to absorb the product, it doesn’t have a chance to really set in your skin and protect it properly. So instead of applying your SPF and heading outside right away, allow your skin 10-20 minutes after applying it to soak in your skin before heading out the door. In addition to giving yourself enough time to absorb the SPF, don’t forget to get into the habit of reapplying SPF throughout the day. Experts suggest that most SPF products and their protection benefits begin to wear off after about 2 hours or so, so keep track of that time and be sure to reapply within that time frame to keep your skin protected from the sun.

Choose Cosmetics with Built-In SPF

When you’re planning to spend time outdoors in the sun, you want to focus on having multiple sources of SPF and make sure the products you’re applying are going to help care for your skin. Many experts suggest focusing on using cosmetic products that include SPF in them as an added benefit. This will help give you a little extra protection and not feel like you have to sacrifice not wearing makeup for SPF or vice versa.

Minimize Peak Hours

We want you to enjoy the sunshine and the outdoors as much as you can during this time of year, but we also want to help make sure your skin is being well protected and cared for. It’s said that the sun and it’s ultra-violet rays are at their strongest (peak) between 10am and 4pm. That being said, it’s suggested to minimize your time in the direct sunlight during those hours. Try to spend more time in the shade, if and when possible, and make sure you’re using SPF that’s protecting you from both UVA and UVB rays.
