In life, we want to command attention from others. What many may not realize is that the way we dress can have a huge influence on really looking the part, and ultimately commanding attention from others. Let’s face it, we want to be taken seriously (especially in professional environments) so we might as well use it to our advantage and dress in a way that commands the attention we desire. So to help you get started, we’re sharing a few tips to help you achieve that.
Wear Proper Fitting Clothes
Ok so here’s the deal, when you want to command attention, it’s super important you’re dressed in clothes that actually fit properly. Why? Think about it, when you’re wearing clothes that don’t fit your body the way they’re supposed to, you probably find yourself fussing, fidgeting, and generally feeling uncomfortable in your clothes. In turn, the focus goes to you doing those things rather than what you want the attention on. In addition, when we don’t wear clothes that fit us right or are too big, it can be distracting leading others to see the clothes first instead of us. Whether it’s too big or too small, the clothes need to fit so people are able to notice you.
Don’t Show Too Much
While we want to command attention, we also want to command the right kind of attention. Showing too much skin can be distracting for the people we’re looking to command attention from. Instead of showing a lot of skin, pick a focal point and find ways to draw the eye to that focal point instead of just your body. Typically, you want people to notice you and look you in the eyes when commanding attention. So, you’ll want to do little things like wear jewelry that draws the eye up towards your face and even wearing a v-neck or scoop neck top to bring the attention to your face. It’s the little touches that can help make a huge difference to bring attention to you. There’s a fine line between celebrating your shape, and it being distracting for others. Find a happy medium for the situation you’re in.
Dress the Part
While it’s amazing to dress in a way that’s unique to you, and truly helps represent your personality, it’s also important you dress in a way that really represents the role you’re in when you’re looking to command respect. For example, when you hire a lawyer, you want them to look like a lawyer not someone in fashion PR. While there are definitely ways to bring your own unique twist into dressing as a lawyer is expected to, you want to be sure you’re not losing sight of the latter. When you’re commanding respect in certain situations, it’s important that your clothes aren’t distracting and often if you’re dressed in a way that’s completely unexpected to others it can be distracting for them and they’re likely focused on what you’re wearing rather than you.
All in all, it comes down to dressing in a way that people notice you before the clothes. How do you dress to command respect?
