It’s safe to say we all deal with significant amounts of stress in our daily lives. The world we live in today is filled with an overabundance of stress and overwhelm, this “busy” mentality. While it’s difficult to completely eliminate all stress in our lives, there have been a lot of great natural ways for us to try to cope with stress. One of those is dance, yes you read that correctly! Dance has been found to be an incredible asset to utilize for coping and handling stress levels in an individual’s life. Let’s talk about some of the ways that dancing helps with stress…
Gets You Active
When you dance, your body releases endorphins which are said to increase mood and help people feel happier. Plus, most of us really aren’t getting enough activity into our days so dancing is a great way to get up and get our bodies moving. It’s great for our health, which can also help with stress levels.
Emotional Release
Many experts and dance instructors have said that dancing has been found to be incredibly freeing for individuals. Dance is often looked at as an emotional release, as well as helps boost confidence and self-awareness levels. Because dance is a process of letting go, and using your body it’s been found to help in these areas. There have been countless studies done to find these results hold true.
Aids in Brain Function
There have been more studies done that have found dance helps stimulate brain function. Whether you’re doing a choreographed dance or not, experts have discovered that the aspect of coordinating movements with sound keeps your mind stimulated and thinking in a different way than your normal day-to-day activities typically do.
Gets You Out of Your Comfort Zone
If you’re not typically a dancer, doing something completely different from your normal day-to-day activities is a great way to do something outside of your comfort zone. If it is outside your norm, it can help you boost your confidence (again) and get in tune with yourself and emotions in a different way than you’re probably used to.
Great Distraction
When you’re caught up in your daily life and all the stress that comes along with it, you need a release or distraction to alleviate some of the stress levels. Dancing has been found to be a great distraction for people, because while you’re dancing you’re more focused on the movements and keeping up with the rhythms – it’s much easier to suddenly think less (if at all) about whatever stressors were going on that day or week. Dancing involves using your entire body and mind, not leaving much room to even have space to think about whatever stresses you left behind.
You probably didn’t realize dancing had all these incredible benefits. Because we get so trapped into the thoughts of how busy and stressed we are, we sometimes forget that incorporating something as simple as dancing can be such a great way to step back from our stressful lives and embrace ourselves and enjoy the moment.
